bored in pittsburgh - ex pilots - motel

The lead single from the group’s upcoming second LP, Motel Cable (Smoking Room).

There are a few points near the beginning of “Motel” where, on first listen, I thought my laptop speakers blew up. The guitars were chiming intricately away against brisk drums and distorted vocal melodies, when all of a sudden a cacophonous blare of noise overwhelmed everything. It receded quickly, and I said, “Huh,” and squinted at my computer, searching for wisps of smoke. When the noise burst to life again, I realized it was there on purpose, and I said, “Hell yeah.” The final discordant tidal wave leads into a gentle interlude built around a swirling refrain: “Don’t hang on until you feel it’s alright / Don’t hang on until you need it.” When the verse comes back in, all of its components have risen in volume to match the explosion that reared its head the first time around. Frontman Ethan Oliva belts, “Pressure turns to strife / You’ll look for me in your life / I won’t be there / You won’t conjure me / Build a heaven, culled and free / I won’t be there,” waving goodbye as he rides a solar flare guitar riff beyond the horizon. Stay tuned for Motel Cable, due out on Friday, August 23rd, with a release show that night at Cattivo.
