The noise punk trio’s latest release is the searing Coagula.

Summer has gotten complicated. I would rather throw my computer into a river than follow along with the season’s many subtypes, which include hot girl, rot girl, white boy, and brat. Luckily, Flash Thunder keep things brutally simple with “My Worst Summer (So Far),” Coagula‘s pulse-pounding opening track. Vocalist David Watt does not mince words when he howls, “My worst summer has come and gone / I stayed in bed / I shivered and bled / The darkest thoughts were filling up my head,” the words clawing from his larynx like mountaineers hauling their bruised bodies over the lip of a ravine. The nightmarish instrumental beatdown that follows lands its blows with nothing more than drums and distorted bass, while Watt dredges up more gnarled roars. “I need a break, I need a break,” he gasps near the end, grimly inverting the collective childhood memory of bursting through a set of double doors as a bell peals out the schoolyear. When you’re a kid, summer is the break, but when you get older, summer can break you.
