Dittocrush, Miles Scharff, and Ross Antonich are TGD Hiss Ensemble.

The trio’s self-titled debut includes three segments of extended improvisation. “II,” which runs the longest at twenty-three minutes, conjures an extraterrestrial sound bubble. Dittocrush’s modulated, rainy fizz encases everything, like a deluge rapping against blurred glass, inside of which droning electronics, unconstrained drums, and abstract guitars maintain wide-ranging conversation. Antonich’s percussion comes in striking bursts that explode periodically from low-lying cymbal taps, and Scharff’s six-string runs babble and bleat like a curious alien creature sniffing around the freeform rhythm’s contours. It’s a supremely strange piece that surprises from beginning to end.
