The Vincent Nesbert Murals of Allegheny County Courthouse - Doors Open Pittsburgh

I roped the lovely and talented Mrs. MacTaggart into being a volunteer docent at Doors Open Pittsburgh with me this past weekend. As newly-minted empty nesters, we’re trying new activities.

I worked the lobby, she worked a courtroom on the third floor. That meant I got to point out the five murals of Vincent Nesbert at the base of the main staircase, provided in 1937, about 50 years after the building was completed.

I’m no expert on murals or art history, but I will say that it’s interesting to see the Cathedral of Learning in a mural whose age and subject matter both seem too old to include it. It took me a bit to realize, but I figured it out about ten minutes into my 3 hour shift.

If you’ve never heard of Doors Open Pittsburgh, or never thought of volunteering, I strongly recommend checking it out.
