bored in pittsburgh - scrum force - scrumantha

A bleary-eyed ode to a mannequin head.

I love a silly name. Some of my favorite books feature characters dubbed Pig Bodine, Captain Aardvark, U.S.S. Millicent Kent, and Nurse Waddams, and when I write fiction I try to give characters the most obnoxious and grating monikers possible. Just reading the title of “Scrumantha,” the new single by Scrum Force, makes me laugh. I think it’s the gurgling growl of the “scr” sound that does it. The name fits the music, which builds from a slack-jawed, bent-note, Codeine-esque churn to a pummeling, shredding climax. Vocalist Rodd Weatherford finds himself so moved by his feelings for the titular mannequin head–blue and green-eyed, lipsticked, scarred–that he resorts to shredding his throat for the song’s noisy final minute. His passion makes you wish you could meet Scrumantha in the flesh, er, plastic.
