bored in pittsburgh - murder for girls - shark

The trio’s new single comes with a video from Michi Tapes.

“Shark” uses tension wire riffs, menacing bass, clipped drums, and jumprope-chant vocals to conjure images of a seedy, anonymous locale populated by figures who lurk at their tables, illuminated by yellow light and wreathed in cigarette smoke. As you walk in, “There’s a lady in the doorway / She says, ‘Hello, what’s your name, friend?'” All you can muster is an “I don’t know” before you lay your money down. Murder for Girls don’t specify what you’re paying for, but they do warn, “You won’t get far.” The song’s tone gives the exchange the feel of a devil’s bargain; perhaps it’s only a game of pool with a cunning opponent, perhaps it’s your soul up for grabs. Lines are punctuated with singsong refrains of “I don’t know, I don’t know,” “Maybe not, maybe not,” and “Maybe so, maybe so,” creating a disorientation that’s mirrored in the video. Behind a technicolor veil of glitching static, a 70’s cartoon band rocks out while live action sharks swim in and out of frame. Stay out of the water.
