David Bernabo: "Big Place"

An audio experience to meditate with. Completely unexpected. Make some time and try it.

Artist Bio: David Bernabo is an oral historian, musician, artist, and independent filmmaker. He performs music in Watererer, How Things Are Made, and Else collective. His film work has documented western Pennsylvania food systems, climate change, the studio practices of composers and artists, and the histories of iconic arts institutions like the Mattress Factory. He is most noted for Moundsville, a documentary co-directed with former Wall Street Journal writer John W. Miller, which screened on PBS for three years, and the biographical documentary Just For The Record about avant-garde composer “Blue” Gene Tyranny.

He is a founding partner at Bright Archives. Previously, he worked at the Carnegie Mellon University Oral History Program, where he conducted oral histories and co-produced the Cut Pathways podcast. Prior to working at CMU, Bernabo developed videos for clients like PPG, Carnegie Museum of Art, and 412 Food Rescue

Artist’s Notes: This is a new electronic work called "Big Place." These are two realizations of a scenario for Butterfly Benjolin and Max, made during rehearsals for a solo set at Adam Kantz's Table for One event on January 10, 2024. Both set-long rehearsals were then re-realized on January 11, 2024, meaning additions or subtractions were made to present two distinct paths through the scenario.

Credits: Produced, mixed, and mastered by David Bernabo, who performed these pieces on the Butterfly Benjolin modular synthesizer and a Max patch made for this set.

Recorded at Woolslayer Traveling Studio, Pittsburgh, PA on January 8, 9, and 11, 2024.
